Disaster Warning Facilities Installed and Reinforced at Godeokcheon in Gangdong-gu to Sound Alarms When River Levels Rise
Three New Disaster Forecast and Warning Facilities Established in Godeokcheon to Quickly Notify Residents of Rising River Levels
Additional Facilities Installed in Blind Spots to Strengthen Prevention of Isolation Accidents Caused by Rapid River Currents
Gangdong-gu (Mayor Lee Suhee) announced that it will install and reinforce warning facilities that broadcast disaster alerts when the river swells, to prevent isolation accidents caused by rapid river currents during the summer season.
Godeokcheon, located in the Godeok, Sangil, and Gangil-dong areas, is a popular riverside walking trail for many residents, but there is a risk of isolation accidents when the river level rises rapidly during heavy rain.
Although voice-converted warning broadcasts notifying residents of rising river levels are currently transmitted, some sections are too far for the alerts to be heard, and some facilities still use manual transmission methods, making rapid warning broadcasts difficult.
Accordingly, to eliminate blind spots in warning broadcasts, the district plans to install and reinforce disaster forecast and warning facilities that measure the water level and rainfall of Godeokcheon. When these values reach preset thresholds, a stored recorded broadcast will be automatically transmitted according to the warning issuance stage.
In March of this year, Gangdong-gu secured over 200 million won from the Seoul Metropolitan Government’s Disaster Management Fund and began projects including the installation of three disaster forecast and warning facilities (automatic rainfall warning facilities) and three river CCTV cameras. The district plans to ensure smooth operation of these facilities by the end of July.
Choi Kang-yoon, Director of the Water Management Division, stated, “Since sudden heavy rains are expected frequently this summer, we will thoroughly prepare in advance and do our best to reinforce and manage the facilities so that no residents suffer damage.”
