Ministry of Science and ICT Announcement on the 7th
11 Institutions Including Yeongodae Selected for General Track
Shinhan University and Halla University Chosen for Specialized Track
Thirteen institutions, including Yonsei University and Korea University, have been selected as Software-Centered Universities (SW-Centered Universities) for 2023. Launched in 2015, the SW-Centered University program is an initiative by the Ministry of Science and ICT aimed at fostering specialized and convergent software talent through industry demand-based software curriculum reform, expansion of software major quotas, and convergence education for non-majors. To date, it has produced 40,419 software major personnel and 27,136 convergence personnel.
The Ministry of Science and ICT announced these selection results on the 7th. For the specialized track, 10 universities applied this year, with Shinhan University and Halla University being selected. For the general track, a total of 36 universities applied, and Kyungnam University, Kyung Hee University, Korea University, Kunsan National University, Dongguk University, Dong-A University, Pusan National University, Suncheon National University, Yeungnam University, Yonsei University, and Handong Global University were selected. General track universities will receive 950 million KRW, and specialized track universities will receive 475 million KRW in support, with funding provided for up to 8 years. The program plans to operate various project directions tailored to each university’s characteristics, including digital education within universities, support for basic software education for elementary, middle, and high school students, development and sharing of high-quality online educational content, and industry-academia cooperation with local companies.
Oh Yong-su, Director of Software Policy at the Ministry of Science and ICT, stated, “SW-Centered Universities have not only driven the development of Korea’s software industry but also contributed to nurturing core talent who will lead successful digital transformation by solving social issues through digital means and spreading software value in local communities. As SW-Centered Universities have established themselves as incubators of software talent leading the era of digital deepening through active cooperation with regions and companies, we will continue to expand support to help alleviate the workforce shortage in the industry.”
