Goseong-gun Prays for the Souls of Patriotic Martyrs and War Veterans on Memorial Day

Over 350 Attendees Including National Merit Recipients and Bereaved Families

Goseong-gun, Gyeongnam Province, held a Memorial Day ceremony on the 6th at the Chung-hon Tower Plaza in Namsan Park to pray for the souls of the patriotic martyrs and war heroes who contributed and sacrificed for the country and to honor their meritorious deeds on the occasion of the 68th Memorial Day.


This year’s ceremony was held with about 350 residents attending, including veterans, families of fallen soldiers, national merit recipients, veterans’ organizations, heads of institutions and organizations, military personnel, and students, as the COVID-19 crisis alert level was lowered from “serious” to “caution” after 3 years and 4 months, and the endemic was declared. They paid tribute to the 1,274 war heroes from Goseong-gun enshrined at the Chung-hon Tower.

The event began at exactly 10 a.m. with a moment of silence in response to the nationwide siren, followed by flower offerings and incense burning, a memorial address, and the singing of the Memorial Day song together with the Goseong-gun Women’s Choir.


At the ceremony venue, Goseong-gun held a photo exhibition of the Korean War records, which moved the veterans who had participated in the war to tears. For the convenience of elderly attendees, Goseong-gun operated shared vehicles provided jointly by eight veterans’ organizations to transport people from Namsan Park to the Chung-hon Tower Plaza.


In addition, the Goseong-eup Red Cross Volunteer Society prepared refreshments for about 500 people attending the ceremony to express gratitude to the families of veterans. Every year, the Goseong-eup Red Cross Volunteer Society independently funds and distributes snack packages to veteran families attending the Memorial Day ceremony.


In his memorial address, County Governor Lee Sang-geun said, “A culture of honoring and remembering those who sacrificed for the country is the driving force behind national development. Our county will do its utmost to ensure that there is no neglect in the respect and support for national merit recipients and their families who sacrificed for the country, and we will repay them with the prosperity of Goseong, protected by the blood and sweat of our ancestors.”


In celebration of June as the Month of National Defense and Veterans, Goseong-gun paid a 50,000 KRW encouragement grant for the first time after revising the ordinance to 1,021 national merit recipients in Goseong-gun.
