"The perpetrator escaped from prison and said they would beat someone to death"
The victim of the so-called 'Busan spinning kick' incident, in which a man with no prior acquaintance assaulted a woman on her way home for no reason, expressed fear of retaliatory crime.
The victim, a woman in her 20s identified as A, revealed her anxiety on June 6th on CBS Radio's 'Kim Hyun-jung's News Show,' saying, "The perpetrator memorized my address after moving from the detention center."
A said, "(The perpetrator's cellmate) asked me, 'I heard the name of your apartment, do you live there?'" and added, "That gave me chills."
She continued, "He is saying he will escape and beat me to death," and "This was chilling because the perpetrator is currently in Busan Detention Center, and I live nearby, which gave me goosebumps." A suspects that the perpetrator obtained information such as her address and resident registration number during the civil lawsuit process.
She said, "This case itself is not just attempted murder; it was only by chance that it remained attempted murder," and "I was miraculously able to survive because a resident happened to discover it." She added, "If they release the perpetrator while he is saying things like 'I will retaliate' and 'I will escape,' I am very anxious about whether I have to accept this foreseeable reality, and I just want to be saved."
A also spoke about her current condition. She said, "Currently, the paralysis in my right lower body has been relieved and I am undergoing rehabilitation, but psychologically I am anxious and wake up every two hours," and "I have lost about 10 kg and still have very little strength."
Prosecution Requests 35-Year Prison Sentence for 'Busan Spinning Kick' Perpetrator
The Busan spinning kick incident occurred around 5 a.m. on May 22 last year at the shared entrance of an officetel in Jin-gu, Busan. The perpetrator, a former security company employee, was indicted on charges of assaulting A by chasing her for about 10 minutes and suddenly delivering a spinning kick to the back of her head, and was sentenced to 12 years in prison in the first trial.
However, on May 31, the prosecution changed the main charge to attempted rape and murder and requested a 35-year prison sentence. Additional charges included dragging the victim to a CCTV blind spot after knocking her unconscious and removing her clothes. The prosecution stated, "DNA reanalysis of the victim's clothes detected the defendant's DNA on the cardigan and jeans."
The appellate trial sentencing hearing will be held at 2 p.m. on the 12th.
