Ma Dong-seok's Nuclear Fist Signals Revival of Korean Cinema
'Transformers 7' Starts at 210,000+ Viewers, Ranks 2nd
The movie 'Crime City 3' attracted 6 million viewers within a week of its release, signaling a promising milestone for the series to surpass 20 million viewers.
According to the Korea Film Council's integrated box office system on the 7th, 'Crime City 3' (directed by Lee Sang-yong) drew 842,621 viewers on the holiday of Memorial Day, June 6th, securing the number one spot at the box office. Since its release on the 31st of last month, it has accumulated a total of 6,053,224 viewers.
'Crime City 3' depicts detective Ma Seok-do (played by Ma Dong-seok) moving to the Seoul Metropolitan Investigation Unit and launching a crime eradication operation to catch Ju Seong-cheol (Lee Jun-hyuk), the mastermind behind a new type of drug crime, and another villain involved in the drug case, Ricky (Aoki Munetaka). Actor Ma Dong-seok participated as both lead and producer.
The film reached 2 million viewers on its third day, 3 million on the fourth, 4 million on the fifth, and 5 million on the sixth day, continuing its box office success. On the Memorial Day holiday, exactly one week after its release, it attracted 6 million viewers, bringing the series within reach of surpassing 20 million viewers.
The 'Crime City' series began with the first film in 2017, which attracted 6.88 million viewers and was a box office success. The second film, released in May last year, drew 10 million viewers, gaining continuous popularity. Following the previous installment, which was the highest-grossing Korean film after the COVID-19 pandemic, the third sequel in the series has also been successful.
'Transformers: Rise of the Beasts,' which was released the day before, started strong at number two with 211,508 viewers.
In third place was the animation 'Pok?mon DP: Arceus and the Jewel of Life,' attracting around 40,000 viewers, followed by 'Guardians of the Galaxy: Volume 3' with about 26,000 viewers in fourth place.
Fifth place went to 'The Little Mermaid,' sixth to 'Super Mario Bros.,' and seventh to 'Fast & Furious: Ride or Die.'
The total number of moviegoers who visited theaters that day was recorded at 1,198,110.
