Ulsan Strengthens Bicycle Road Safety... Selected for 'Accident Risk Improvement Project'

Secured 260 Million Won in Disaster Safety Special Grants

Plan to Renovate Bicycle Paths at Taehwagang Riverside and Sirye-dong

Ulsan City has been selected as a project target to improve the accident risk on bicycle roads.

Ulsan City announced that it secured 260 million KRW in disaster safety special grants after being selected in the 2023 Bicycle Road Accident Risk Area Safety Improvement Project competition hosted by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety.

This project aims to reduce risk factors by improving safety and expanding facilities on bicycle roads where bicycle accidents have frequently occurred or where there is a high risk of accidents.

The project sites are the Taehwagang Riverside Reed Field bicycle road (Myeongchon Bridge to Yangjeong 1 Bridge) and the Dongcheon bicycle road area in Sirae-dong, Buk-gu. Seven safety accidents have occurred in these areas over the past three years.

The Taehwagang Riverside Reed Field bicycle road is a popular area for commuters using bicycles and citizens taking walks, but since the bicycle and pedestrian roads are not separated, it is a high-risk area for safety accidents.

Ulsan City plans to secure safety by expanding the road width and separating the bicycle and pedestrian roads over approximately 700 meters, with a project budget of 400 million KRW (200 million KRW in grants and 200 million KRW in city funds).

The Dongcheon bicycle road area in Sirae-dong is not separated by curbs between bicycle and pedestrian roads, causing frequent complaints from pedestrians due to bicycle users encroaching on sidewalks.

For this area, a budget of 120 million KRW (60 million KRW in grants and 60 million KRW in district funds) will be used to install central curbs over approximately 700 meters and to maintain safety signs and pavement markings.

An official from Ulsan City stated, “By maintaining the bicycle roads, the routes of bicycle users and pedestrians will be separated, which will help prevent safety accidents,” and added, “In addition to this competitive project, we will continuously maintain bicycle roads so that citizens can use bicycles more safely and conveniently.”

In 2021, Ulsan City carried out safety improvement projects targeting the Dongcheon bicycle road area in Jungsan-dong, and in 2022, the bicycle roads within Taehwagang National Garden.
