Gwangjin-gu Launches Cockroach Extermination Operation! Intensive Summer Disinfection Begins

Proactive Pest Control Activities Begin in May to Prevent Hygiene Pest Damage in Summer

Disinfection Work Conducted at Major Habitats in 15 Neighborhoods, Additional Pest Control in 4 Vulnerable Areas Based on Complaint Analysis

Year-Round Operation of Health Center Pest Control Task Force, Immediate Response to Complaints to Alleviate Inconvenience

Gwangjin-gu (Mayor Kim Kyung-ho) is intensifying its "disinfection project" to preemptively block hygiene pests such as cockroaches that transmit infectious diseases.

The period from June to August, marked by the rainy season and heat waves, creates a hot and humid environment that causes a rapid increase in cockroach populations. Especially, due to recent abnormal weather, hygiene pests that carry infectious diseases have appeared early, causing many people to suffer.

In response, the district quickly sought countermeasures to prevent damage to residents. Together with a professional pest control company contracted through an open bidding process, they are focusing all efforts on extermination work during May and June. Since cockroaches reproduce easily if not suppressed early, a proactive response has been initiated.

First, disinfection was conducted across all 15 neighborhoods. The Gwangjin-gu Health Center and the professional pest control company collaborated to install bait poison and spray disinfectants at major cockroach habitats such as septic tanks, manholes, water meters, and sewers.

Additionally, extra pest control will be carried out in areas with frequent cockroach complaints. By carefully analyzing complaint data from the past three years, four neighborhoods were identified as vulnerable areas, where pest control operations will be conducted twice more to establish a more thorough pest control network.

Furthermore, to prevent hygiene pest damage throughout the year, the health center operates a pest control task force. The reinforced team of 12 personnel will carry out pest control activities until October. They will immediately respond to complaints, quickly take action, notify residents of the results via text message, and plan to conduct proactive pest control on Saturdays in June as well.

Other efforts include distributing informational leaflets on hygiene pest prevention and having visiting nurses from the community service deliver cockroach insecticides to vulnerable households.

Mayor Kim Kyung-ho stated, “Creating a pleasant and healthy living environment is the first step toward residents’ happiness,” and added, “We will continue to promote a systematic and sustained disinfection project to ensure that all areas of Gwangjin-gu are safe from hygiene pests such as cockroaches.”
