LG Electronics "Switching All Business Sites to Renewable Energy by 2050"

Joining 'RE100'
Switching to 100% Renewable Energy for Power Use by 2050

LG Electronics has finalized its plan to supply 100% of the electricity used at all domestic and overseas business sites with renewable energy by 2050, completing its membership in the RE100 initiative. RE100 is a voluntary campaign that aims to switch all electricity used in corporate activities to renewable energy sources such as solar and wind power.

To achieve RE100, LG Electronics plans to gradually increase the proportion of renewable energy use in the order of 60% by 2030, 90% by 2040, and 100% by 2050. In addition to expanding renewable energy generation and use through high-efficiency solar panels installed at business sites, the company will actively pursue various measures such as purchasing Renewable Energy Certificates (REC), Power Purchase Agreements (PPA) for renewable energy, and the Green Premium offered by Korea Electric Power Corporation.

Currently, in collaboration with domestic power producer GS EPS, LG Electronics is constructing a direct PPA solar power plant on the rooftop of the integrated production building at Changwon LG Smart Park, aiming for completion in 2025. The facility, which covers an area equivalent to three soccer fields, partially began operation after completing some sections in December last year.

With this RE100 membership, LG Electronics will accelerate not only the transition to renewable energy but also its carbon neutrality plans. Switching to renewable energy for electricity use also helps reduce indirect carbon emissions (Scope 2) associated with power consumption. LG Electronics has announced its Carbon Neutral 2030 plan to achieve net zero direct and indirect (Scope 1 and 2) carbon dioxide emissions by 2030.

Meanwhile, to mark World Environment Day, a plastic reduction campaign video produced by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) will be screened on large electronic billboards in New York’s Times Square and London’s Piccadilly Circus until the end of this month. Lee Sam-su, Vice President and Chief Sustainability Officer of LG Electronics, stated, “We will implement various measures to achieve 100% renewable energy transition and carbon neutrality, creating LG Electronics’ ESG vision of ‘Better Life for All.’”
