Songpa-gu Selected as the First Pilot Area for the Ministry of Science and ICT’s Overhead Cable Maintenance Project, Securing 2.7 Billion KRW... Aiming to Improve Urban Aesthetics

Maintenance and Joint Inspections to be Conducted in Seokchon-dong, Ogeum-dong, Songpa-dong, and Bangi-dong by November This Year

Seo Gang-seok, Mayor of Songpa-gu: “We will improve urban aesthetics and ensure safety by maintaining overhead cables tangled like spider webs”

Songpa-gu (Mayor Seo Gang-seok) announced that it has been selected as a pilot area for the 2023 overhead cable maintenance project by the Ministry of Science and ICT, securing 2.7 billion KRW in project funds (national subsidy), and will proceed with maintenance in four neighborhoods by November this year.

Among six local governments nationwide selected as pilot project areas, Songpa-gu was chosen as one of the top three key project sites.

Seo Gang-seok, Mayor of Songpa-gu, explained, “Overhead cables tangled like spider webs not only spoil the urban aesthetics but also pose a threat to residents’ safety during the rainy season and strong winds. Therefore, maintaining them is essential to improving a safe living environment.”

Accordingly, the district plans to maintain overhead cables in Seokchon-dong, Ogeum-dong, Songpa-dong, and Bangi-dong by November.

The maintenance involves bundling and organizing wires and broadcasting communication cables tangled like spider webs on roads and buildings, as well as removing abandoned cables. Additionally, various cables and related facilities adjacent to residential windows will be removed and maintained to ensure safety.

In particular, by being selected as a pilot area for overhead cable maintenance, the district will enhance the project’s completeness by adding a ‘maintenance site inspection and evaluation’ procedure.

On the 16th of last month, district officials completed a joint inspection of overhead cable maintenance in Seokchon-dong maintenance zone (Zone 1) together with seven companies including Korea Electric Power Corporation and broadcasting communication operators. Joint inspections and individual maintenance will continue until September, followed by a completion confirmation process after maintenance is finished.

Furthermore, the district is making various efforts to improve the overhead cable maintenance method. To resolve the proliferation of incoming cables caused by new broadcasting communication facility installations, the district is seeking residents’ cooperation to change the distribution box installation location from utility poles to building rooftops.

In addition, since 2021, the district has been fully committed to discovering and improving target areas to prevent the proliferation of overhead cables within the district, including conducting an overhead cable maintenance project throughout Samjeon-dong.

Seo Gang-seok, Mayor of Songpa-gu, stated, “We expect this maintenance project to dramatically improve urban aesthetics and secure residents’ safety. Especially as we have been selected as a pilot project site, we will make every effort to ensure thorough maintenance and create a safe city, Songpa.”
