The Beha Philharmonic Orchestra announced on the 3rd that it has signed an agreement with Aslico, the Italian Opera and Concert Association, and will hold the Aslico Competition Asian contest in Korea from November 5 to 16.
Dominique Meyer, director of La Scala Theater, will serve as the head judge for the Asian competition held in Korea and will come to Korea with other judges to select opera talents. The Aslico Competition organizers explained that starting this year, the Asian competition will be held annually.
The Aslico Competition was established in 1949 to discover young and talented opera singers. Opera singers such as Carlo Bergonzi, Renata Scotto, Piero Cappuccilli, and Nicola Martinucci were discovered through this competition.
The five winners of the first-ever Asian competition this year will advance to the Aslico Competition semifinals. The top three in the Asian competition will receive airfare, accommodation, and a total prize of 9,000 euros to participate in the global competition held in Como, Italy, in January next year. The next two runners-up will be provided with airfare and accommodation.
They will compete in the competition held in Italy in January next year. If they win in the global finals, they can participate free of charge in the pre-incubation process for opera productions through Aslico Education. During the training period, a living allowance of 300 euros per week will be provided. Additionally, a 2,000-euro production preparation support fund and performance fees ranging from 5,000 to 6,000 euros per production will be provided.
Barbara Minghetti, Aslico Italy Programming Director, said, "The Aslico Competition is not a contest that ranks participants but a competition that casts winners in operas," adding, "We are pleased that this competition now grants eligibility to participants from Asia."
