April 3, WADA President and Busan Mayor Request Support and Cooperation for Successful 2025 Assembly Hosting
On the 2nd at 4:30 PM, Busan City appointed volleyball queen Kim Yeon-koung as an ambassador to promote the successful hosting of the ‘2025 World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) General Assembly.’
The ambassador appointment ceremony was attended by Ahn Byung-yoon, Deputy Mayor of Administration, Witold Banka, President of the World Anti-Doping Agency (former Minister of Sport and Tourism of Poland), and Kim Geum-pyeong, Secretary General of the Korea Anti-Doping Agency (currently an advisor to WADA).
Appointed as an ambassador, Kim Yeon-koung accepted the honorary position without compensation to protect growing youth athletes from doping and to spread fair play throughout the sports community.
This appointment is noteworthy as it reflects her exceptional love and dedication to the sports world as Korea’s top athlete.
The day after the appointment ceremony, on the 3rd, a meeting will be held between Park Hyung-joon, Mayor of Busan, and Witold Banka. They plan to reaffirm their mutual commitment to the successful hosting of the ‘2025 WADA General Assembly.’
The World Anti-Doping Agency was established as an international monitoring organization after doping issues arose at the 1998 cycling competition under the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
The General Assembly, held every six years with over 2,000 participants from 191 countries including government representatives, IOC members, and anti-doping agencies, decides on very important matters related to anti-doping such as amendments to the World Anti-Doping Code and announcements of international standards revisions.
The ‘2025 WADA General Assembly’ to be held in Busan in November 2025 will be the sixth assembly and the first ever held in Asia. This is a very significant event for Busan, which is making every effort to host the 2030 World Expo.
The city plans to actively lead the successful hosting of the assembly by cooperating with the Korea Anti-Doping Agency and forming a separate support team.
Mayor Park Hyung-joon stated, “We will create an opportunity to spread the values of ‘clean sports and fair competition’ to aspiring athletes, growing youth, and citizens, and through the successful hosting of this large-scale international event involving the whole world, we will demonstrate Busan’s strength as a global MICE city to the world.”
