The number of new unemployment claims in the United States increased slightly last week.
On the 1st (local time), the U.S. Department of Labor announced that the number of new unemployment claims for the week of May 21-27 was 232,000, up 2,000 from 230,000 the previous week. The actual figure fell short of the forecast of 235,000.
The previous week's figure was revised upward by about 1,000 from 229,000.
Weekly new unemployment claims are generally considered to reflect the scale of layoffs in the U.S. The 4-week average of claims was 229,500, 2,500 fewer than the previous figure of 232,000.
