The Gyeongnam Provincial Institute of Health and Environment will conduct a detailed odor investigation from June to September in areas where odor complaints occur, so that residents can enjoy a pleasant living environment.
The number of odor complaints in the province increased about 2.5 times over the past four years, from 2,156 cases in 2018 to 5,495 cases last year. Odor occurrences are concentrated between June and September.
Accordingly, the Institute of Health and Environment plans to conduct a detailed investigation on complex odors and designated odor substances in collaboration with city and county authorities, targeting workplaces with a high number of odor complaints over the past four years.
They also plan to establish pollution reduction measures for areas with major odor sources through real-time mobile monitoring using a mobile measurement system vehicle equipped with a hazardous air measurement system.
Based on the detailed investigation results, the institute will notify the relevant city and county authorities of workplaces exceeding the odor emission standards and request administrative actions and strengthened inspections to prevent recurrence of violations.
Gong Nam-sik, Head of the Air Environment Research Department, said, “We will strive to provide residents with a pleasant living environment through proactive responses based on professional analysis of odor complaints.”
