Dispute Over Contaminated Water from Fukushima Nuclear Accident Plant
The ruling and opposition parties engaged in a heated debate over the issue of contaminated water from the Fukushima nuclear accident site.
On the 1st, Kim Gi-hyeon, leader of the People Power Party, stated at the on-site Supreme Council meeting held at the Gyeonggi Province Party Office in Suwon, Gyeonggi Province, "Our country is suffering due to the false agitation and propaganda by the Democratic Party of Korea," and introduced, "In the past two weeks, the Democratic Party has issued 35 party-level messages related to Fukushima. In contrast, there have been only 13 mentions regarding the Nursing Act, which their own party insisted was necessary, and just 2 mentions about Representative Kim Nam-guk, who is elusive and plays hide-and-seek like a coin gambler."
He continued, "The largest party in the National Assembly has become seriously addicted to fake news and rumor politics, causing our society to suffer from extreme confusion and conflict," and criticized, "Although there are voices of dissatisfaction and concern within the Democratic Party about the excessive irrational rumor agitation, the Lee Jae-myung leadership pays no attention."
Kim also said, "The reason the Democratic Party is obsessed with rumor politics is obvious," and criticized, "It is a shallow political tactic to avoid the serious crisis threatening the party’s very existence due to three major risks: allegations of corruption against the party leader, the overall corruption revealed at the money envelope gambling event, and the severe moral decay exposed by Representative Kim Nam-guk’s poverty cosplay." He emphasized, "The group that fabricated the rumor that eating American beef causes 'brain holes' is making a comeback, and the public is exhausted by the Democratic Party’s exaggerated and fabricated contaminated water rumors, while honest fishermen are forced to worry about their livelihoods."
Along with this, Kim said, "The public clearly remembers the Democratic Party’s deceptive behaviors such as the mad cow disease rumors and THAAD rumors," and warned, "Nevertheless, the public will severely judge the Democratic Party for repeatedly raising anxiety with rumors instead of science on issues directly related to the lives and health of the people and the livelihoods of fishermen."
On the other hand, Lee Jae-myung, leader of the Democratic Party, strengthened the public opinion campaign regarding Fukushima contaminated water.
At an emergency meeting on the attempt to discharge contaminated water from the Fukushima nuclear accident site and measures for people’s livelihood, he pointed out, "We must take action to stop Japan’s dumping of nuclear contaminated water into the ocean, and we actually are taking action, but strangely, the government that should represent all of us is going in the opposite direction." Lee said, "I have heard from various places recently that households and businesses are hoarding salt. It is like a widespread trend," and introduced, "If Japan’s nuclear contaminated water ocean dumping becomes a reality, there are even talks that the price of salt produced before that time and salt produced after that time will differ. It sounds absurd, but it is something that can actually happen."

Lee said, "We plan to push for a parliamentary hearing to verify what the inspection team actually saw and whether proper verification was conducted," and added, "Of course, we will also push again for a resolution opposing ocean dumping, which will not differ from the resolution made by the People Power Party two years ago." He emphasized, "I urge once again that our government actively join the people in opposing the ocean dumping of nuclear contaminated water, which poses a fatal threat not only to the lives and safety of our people but also to our economy and livelihoods," and stressed, "We call on Japan to stop this criminal act that destroys the global ecosystem due to cost concerns."
