Seo-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City (Mayor Kim Ikang) is operating the ‘Visiting Senior Center Sports Stacking Program’ to foster a healthy communication culture.
According to Seo-gu on the 1st, sports stacking, known to promote brain development and prevent dementia, is also called ‘cup stacking’ or ‘hand-based track and field.’ It is a sport where participants stack and unstack 12 specialized cups in various ways, competing in skill and speed.
It has the advantage of being easily enjoyed by anyone at a comfortable location regardless of age. Because it uses both hands, it helps develop the left and right brain evenly, enhancing agility, concentration, and hand-eye coordination, making it a dementia prevention activity especially noted for the elderly.
Seo-gu will operate the sports stacking program every Wednesday at senior centers in the district until December.
Instructors from the Gwangju Metropolitan City Operating Committee of the Korea Sports Stacking Association will participate, and after continuous practice sessions, individual and team competitions are planned for December.
Seo-gu also hosted the ‘2023 WSSA Asian Open Sports Stacking Championship’ and signed a business agreement with the Korea Sports Stacking Association in March. From November 17 to 19, the sports stacking competition will be co-hosted at the Kim Daejung Convention Center.
Kim Ikang, Mayor of Seo-gu, said, “Sports stacking is a game that anyone, regardless of gender or age, can enjoy and communicate through.” He added, “We will actively support many seniors to be energized and enjoy a healthy leisure life through sports stacking.”
