Gumi-si Selected for Service Robot Agile Manufacturing Demonstration Infrastructure Project Competition

Overcoming Regional Electronics and Manufacturing Crisis

Rapid and Customer-Customized Manufacturing Technology

Gumi City in Gyeongbuk has been selected for the project competition to establish an Agile manufacturing demonstration base for electronic convergence components for service robots, hosted by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy.

‘Service robots’ refer to robots whose application range has expanded beyond industrial robots used in manufacturing to fields such as household, medical, defense, and agriculture.

‘Agile manufacturing’ is derived from the term ‘Agile,’ meaning ‘nimble’ or ‘quick.’ Agile manufacturing refers to a method of producing products quickly, launching them to the market, and then remanufacturing by reflecting feedback from customers and demand companies.

The ‘Establishment of an Agile Manufacturing Demonstration Base for Electronic Convergence Components for Service Robots’ project aims to build infrastructure that can be jointly utilized by companies related to electronic convergence components and modules for service robots and to support component manufacturing technology.

The city plans to invest a total project cost of 12.14 billion KRW over five years until 2027 (7.15 billion KRW from the national government, 1.35 billion KRW from the province, and 3.64 billion KRW from the city) to create a service robot Agile manufacturing support center within an already established space of 1,097㎡ in the Gumi Technovalley. They will establish infrastructure for Agile manufacturing by installing 26 types of equipment, including manufacturing equipment, evaluation equipment, and demonstration equipment.

Based on the established infrastructure, the city will build an industrial growth system through ▲demand discovery and business model (BM) planning ▲support for technology development and prototype production ▲discovery and matching of supply companies ▲marketing and mass production support to create a one-stop enterprise support system ▲and formation of a value chain through operation of a collaboration network among demand companies, electronic convergence component companies, and manufacturing companies.

Through this, the city plans to foster high value-added industries in the stagnant local electronics market and support core promising technologies that small and medium-sized enterprises find difficult to develop, along with electronic convergence component manufacturing and demonstration infrastructure.

National Assembly member Gu Ja-geun (Gumi City Gap) said, “To overcome the crisis of the electronics and manufacturing industries in the Gumi area, we will continue to work with the city to discover government support policies for promising new industries and strive to commercialize them.”

Mayor Kim Jang-ho said, “The service robot-related field is a complex of advanced new technologies and is a very important industrial sector nationally. Through this project, we will support small and medium-sized enterprises in responding to changes in the electronic manufacturing industrial environment and strive to recover Gumi City’s electronic manufacturing industry by creating promising new industries.”
