Analysis of Separate Sales of Top 1000 Listed Companies from 1996 to 2022 Over 27 Years
Over 250 Companies Joined the 1 Trillion Won Sales Club Last Year, the Highest Since 1996
Samsung Electronics Tops for 21 Consecutive Years, Surpassing 200 Trillion Won in Separate Sales Last Year for the First Time
Samsung Electronics surpassed 200 trillion KRW in standalone sales for the first time last year, maintaining its position as the number one company in Korea for 21 consecutive years.
The Korea CXO Research Institute, a corporate analysis specialist, announced the results of its "Analysis of Sales of the Top 1,000 Listed Companies in Korea" on the 1st. It surveyed the top 1,000 listed companies by sales (including financial and holding companies) over 27 years from 1996 to last year.
Last year, the total sales of the top 1,000 listed companies amounted to 1,993 trillion KRW, the highest since 1996. This was a 14.9% increase compared to 2021 (1,734 trillion KRW). Among the 1,000 companies, 825 (82.5%) saw their sales increase compared to 2021. The sales of the top 1,000 listed companies first exceeded 1,000 trillion KRW in 2008 (1,197 trillion KRW) and surpassed 1,500 trillion KRW in 2018 (1,537 trillion KRW).
The number one company was Samsung Electronics. Last year, its sales reached 211.8674 trillion KRW, marking the 200 trillion KRW level. On a consolidated basis, sales reached 302.2313 trillion KRW, entering the 300 trillion KRW era.
Samsung Electronics accounted for 10.6% of the total sales of the top 1,000 companies last year. This maintained the 10% range following 11.2% in 2020 and 11.5% in 2021. The top three companies by sales were Samsung Electronics, Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) with 68.9515 trillion KRW, and Hyundai Motor Company with 65.3083 trillion KRW.
There were 258 companies in the '1 trillion KRW club' last year, an increase of 29 companies (12.7%) from 229 in 2021. Thirty-eight companies joined the 10 trillion KRW club, up 4 companies (11.8%) from 34 in 2021. Korean Air, Samsung Securities, LG Energy Solution, GS Retail, and Dongyang Life Insurance joined the 10 trillion KRW club. POSCO Holdings dropped off the list last year as its sales decreased from the 39 trillion KRW range in 2021 to the 8 trillion KRW range due to corporate restructuring.
Oilseon Oh, Director of the CXO Research Institute, stated, "The increase in raw material prices due to the Russia-Ukraine war and other factors was reflected in product prices, leading to increased corporate sales last year." He added, "This year, except for automobile and secondary battery companies, sales are likely to decrease compared to last year."
