Software Development to Promote the Use of Open Source Semiconductor IP 'RISC-V'
Samsung Electronics will participate in an open-source software (SW) development project to build and expand an advanced semiconductor ecosystem.
On May 31 (U.S. time), Samsung Electronics announced that it will serve as a board member of the open-source software development project "RISE," launched by the Linux Foundation, a nonprofit open-source organization. Open source refers to making the source code necessary for software development freely available so that anyone can use, modify, and redistribute it.
RISE aims to develop software using the open-source semiconductor design asset (IP) "RISC-V." Thirteen global IT and semiconductor companies, including Samsung Electronics, Google, Intel, NVIDIA, and Qualcomm, are participating as board members.
Due to its open-source nature, RISC-V is not owned by any specific company. Once software is developed, all companies will be able to use it free of charge for semiconductor design, which is expected to contribute to the expansion of the related ecosystem.
In particular, it will become easier to implement applications or services running on chipsets based on RISC-V. It also allows for resource savings needed for development and maintenance. Samsung Electronics explained that it could be applied in various fields in the future, including ▲mobile ▲home appliances ▲data centers ▲vehicle applications.
Amber Huffman, senior researcher at Google and chairperson of the RISE project, said, "To commercialize RISC-V, it is important to secure software that has performance, security, reliability, and commercial viability," adding, "Through RISE, we will secure verified software and expand the RISC-V ecosystem.
Park Suhong, head of the Open Source Group at Samsung Research and a board member of the Linux Foundation, said, "We have joined the project to build a sustainable RISC-V-based open-source software ecosystem" and added, "We will collaborate with other companies."
