Nowon-gu (Mayor Oh Seung-rok) announced that it will hold the ‘2023 Nowon Carbon Neutrality Festival’ on the 3rd in celebration of World Environment Day.
The Carbon Neutrality Festival, now in its second year following last year, was planned to raise awareness of the severity of the climate crisis and the importance of achieving carbon neutrality.
This year, coinciding with World Environment Day (June 5), the event aims to foster global empathy for the climate crisis and encourage widespread participation in carbon neutrality efforts.
Hosted by the ‘Nowon Environmental Foundation,’ the only environmental foundation established by a district in Seoul, the event brings together various local environmental organizations including the Nowon Eco Center, Nowon EZ Center (Nowon Energy Zero Center), Jungnangcheon Environmental Center, as well as the Carbon Neutrality Promotion Council, environmental groups, and schools.
The event will take place from 10 AM to 4 PM at Junggye Deungnamu Cultural Park, with the opening ceremony held at 11 AM on the outdoor stage.
Notably, during the opening ceremony, the ‘Nowon’s 10 Citizen Promises for Carbon Neutrality’ will be declared, pledging cooperation between the public and private sectors to participate in carbon neutrality practices.
To encourage practical participation from residents in carbon neutrality, the district conducted an online survey over the past 10 days targeting residents and selected the final 10 promises.
At the event, about 10 people including the district mayor, representatives of environmental organizations, and students will announce the 10 promises, followed by a performance where a red earth globe with a diameter of 1.5 meters transforms into a blue earth globe.
Additionally, the awards ceremony for the environmental photo contest held over the past month will be conducted, with winning works exhibited to encourage carbon neutrality practice in daily life.
As side events, 43 various experience booths will be operated, including a sunlight playground using solar energy, a solar fountain, cotton candy making using a bicycle power station, and a hydraulic aquarium, allowing visitors to naturally engage with and develop interest in carbon neutrality practices.
A ‘Treasure Quiz Hunt’ event will also be held. The 10 citizen promises will be made into badges and hidden throughout the venue; participants who find the badges and solve environment-related quizzes will receive various prizes.
Moreover, completing the stamp tour through booth experiences will earn participants an energy-saving multi-tap.
Nowon-gu has newly established a Carbon Neutrality Promotion Team this year, creating the Carbon Neutrality Policy Team as the first team to comprehensively oversee carbon neutrality policies, focusing on systematically establishing directions and implementation projects for carbon neutrality.
Mayor Oh Seung-rok said, “The 10 carbon neutrality practices chosen by our residents are easy to implement in our daily lives,” adding, “I ask everyone to take an interest in the climate crisis and actively participate in reducing greenhouse gas emissions.”
