Mapo-gu, 'Two Tops' with Honorary District Mayor for Communication Administration

On the 31st, Lee Seon-jae, principal of Ilseong Girls' Middle and High School, selected as the first honorary district mayor, serving a one-year honorary position

District Mayor Park Gang-su: "A communication channel to openly share good ideas for the development of Mapo"

Mapo-gu (District Mayor Park Gang-su) will appoint an honorary district mayor to represent the voices of residents starting May 31, initiating communication administration with the citizens.

The honorary district mayor project, conducted for the first time in Mapo-gu, aims to reflect various opinions presented by the honorary district mayor participating in the district's policy process. After recruiting and screening candidates, Lee Seon-jae, the current principal of Ilseong Girls' Middle and High School, was selected as the first honorary district mayor.

Lee Seon-jae, who began night school in 1952 with a passion for education, is a citizen who has devoted 70 years to educating local residents by establishing and operating Yangwon Housewives' School and Ilseong Girls' Middle and High School to provide learning opportunities for late learners who missed out on education.

On the 31st, Honorary District Mayor Lee Seon-jae received the appointment certificate and attended the civil complaint report session at the Mapo-gu Office policy meeting room, one of the daily tasks performed by District Mayor Park Gang-su. Afterwards, the meeting moved to the office where Lee received a report on the operation status of 'Mapo School,' an adult literacy education project, from the head of the Education Policy Division.

Honorary District Mayor Lee Seon-jae said, "After actually receiving the work report, I realized for the first time how diverse and numerous the residents' complaints are," and added, "As a citizen who settled in Gongdeok-dong after fleeing during the Korean War and witnessed the development and changes of Mapo, I feel truly honored and grateful to be appointed as honorary district mayor."

He continued, "As honorary district mayor, I will do my best to fulfill my responsibilities and roles for a newer, better, and more livable Mapo."

Honorary District Mayor Lee Seon-jae will serve as an unpaid honorary position for one year, attending regular meetings, pledge report sessions, and various major events, acting as a bridge to convey diverse opinions of citizens to the district office.

District Mayor Park Gang-su said, "As an honorary district mayor and educational pioneer, I ask for your generous advice based on your professional insight and rich experience," and added, "I hope the honorary district mayor system will become another communication channel where citizens' opinions and thoughts can be openly shared for the development of Mapo."
