Semiconductor equipment company Hanmi Semiconductor announced on the 31st that it has officially opened its local subsidiary, Hanmi Vietnam, in the Bac Ninh region of Vietnam, which is rapidly emerging as a new production base for major global semiconductor companies.
Vietnam is attracting attention as an investment destination for global semiconductor companies due to its ability to establish a stable value chain amid ongoing US-China trade conflicts. It has political stability, low labor costs, abundant human resources, and geological advantages with high accessibility to the Asian high-tech supply chain.
Hanmi Semiconductor Vice Chairman and CEO Kwak Dong-shin emphasized, "Hanmi Vietnam local subsidiary will provide close services to Vietnamese customers through sales and service engineer experts," adding, "It was established to actively target the increasingly important Vietnamese market."
The largest foreign investor in Vietnam is Samsung Electronics, which started with $1.3 billion (approximately 1.7 trillion KRW) in 2013 and has currently invested a total of $20 billion (26.25 trillion KRW). Last year, Samsung Electro-Mechanics announced a total investment plan of $2.27 billion (approximately 2.98 trillion KRW) to expand its next-generation semiconductor substrate (FC-BGA) business.
Intel is also considering an additional investment of $1 billion (approximately 1.31 trillion KRW) on top of the previously announced $1.5 billion (approximately 1.97 trillion KRW) in Ho Chi Minh City Hi-Tech Park, Vietnam. The factory is Intel's largest production base, accounting for 70% of Intel's global production volume.
Emcore Technology is preparing to operate a factory by the end of this year with an investment of more than $1.6 billion (approximately 2.1 trillion KRW) in Bac Ninh Province, northern Vietnam. Hanamicron also plans to increase its Vietnamese factory workforce to 3,000 by 2025 as its main overseas production base. In 2021, Taiwan's USI established a factory in Hai Phong, Vietnam, and China's Luxshare also expanded after establishing a factory in Vietnam in 2017, highlighting Vietnam as an important hub in the global semiconductor market today.
