14 Years Adrift, 'Yongin Yeoksam Urban Development' Gains Momentum... General Assembly for Union Leader Election Scheduled for August

14 Years Adrift, 'Yongin Yeoksam Urban Development' Gains Momentum... General Assembly for Union Leader Election Scheduled for August Yongin Yeoksam Urban Development Project Bird's-eye View

The 'Yongin Yeoksam District Urban Development Project,' which had been stalled for a long time due to legal disputes related to the union president, is gaining momentum.

Yongin City announced on the 31st that the court-appointed acting union president of the Yeoksam District Urban Development Project will hold a temporary general meeting to elect a new union president and executive team, and that the registration for election management committee candidates was announced on the 30th.

The registration period for election management committee candidates is from 10 a.m. on the 31st of this month until 5 p.m. on the 7th of next month. The temporary general meeting will be held in August if the conditions for holding it are met.

The Yongin Yeoksam District Urban Development Project is a land readjustment urban development project planned to revitalize the central commercial functions around the Yongin City Hall administrative town area, covering approximately 691,604㎡ around 363 Yeokbuk-dong, Cheoin-gu.

Although administrative procedures such as designation of the urban development zone in 2009, establishment of the development plan, approval of the implementation plan, and approval of the land readjustment plan were completed, the project was stalled for a long time due to numerous legal disputes inside and outside the union.

Meanwhile, the Suwon District Court appointed an acting union president in August last year. According to the union’s bylaws, the acting union president obtained permission for 'extraordinary business acts' from the competent court to convene a temporary general meeting to handle agenda items such as dismissal and new appointment of the union president and executives.

Although the existing union president and executives filed appeals twice, making the holding of the temporary general meeting uncertain, the Supreme Court dismissed the appeals filed by the existing union side on May 2, allowing the acting union president to hold the temporary general meeting through the recruitment of election management committee members.

The acting union president sent a notice last month to all union members outlining the plan to hold the temporary general meeting, emphasizing the need to form a new union executive team.

Since Mayor Lee Sang-il’s inauguration in the 8th term of the civilian government, Yongin City has devoted great effort to normalizing the Yeoksam project. Once the union’s executive team is normalized, the city plans to actively carry out administration to promptly resolve issues that have hindered the progress of the urban development plan through consultation.

A Yongin City official stated, "We expect that the temporary general meeting promoted by the court-appointed acting union president will resolve conflicts within the Yeoksam Urban Development Project union and become a new driving force for the stalled project," adding, "Mayor Lee Sang-il has shown strong determination to normalize the Yeoksam project, and since this project is a large-scale one that greatly influences Yongin City’s future urban planning, the city will do its best to provide administrative support throughout the process of the temporary general meeting and future project progress."
