"Let's lock Dad in a cage" remark... 30-year-old found guilty of slapping 4-year-old child

Child Abuse Conviction... 5 Months Imprisonment, 2 Years Probation

A man in his 30s who could not control his anger and slapped his 4-year-old child’s cheek because the child said, "Let's lock Dad in a cage," was found guilty of child abuse.

According to a Yonhap News report on the 29th, Judge Kwak Gyeong-pyeong of the Incheon District Court Criminal Division 2 sentenced A (33) to five months in prison with a two-year probation period on charges of child abuse under the Child Welfare Act. Judge Kwak also ordered A to attend 40 hours of child abuse recidivism prevention lectures.

A was indicted on charges of slapping his 4-year-old child’s cheek at an apartment in Namdong-gu, Incheon, in June of last year. He committed the crime after hearing a recorded file in which the child told the mother, "Why did you marry a thief like Dad and make me suffer? Let’s put bars on the house and lock Dad up." Earlier, in May of the same year, A was also charged with hitting the child’s buttocks and soles with a back scratcher after returning home because the child did not listen during a kindergarten observation class.

Judge Kwak pointed out, "The defendant had the duty to protect and raise the victim child as a father, but instead, he physically abused the child multiple times," and added, "He also has a history of receiving education and counseling for child abuse charges in the past." He explained the sentencing by saying, "The physical and mental pain and the negative impact on the emotional development that the young victim child must have felt can be fully imagined. However, considering that the defendant admitted his wrongdoing and that his wife pleaded for leniency."
