Venice Canals Dyed Green in Italy... "Possible Environmental Group Protest"

Unknown green liquid spread in the Grand Canal of Venice, Italy, prompting local police to launch an investigation, according to British daily The Guardian and other foreign media on the 28th (local time).

Luca Zaia, governor of Veneto Province, tweeted that morning that the canal water had turned green and stated, "We held an emergency meeting with the police to investigate the identity of the liquid." The local environmental protection agency collected river water samples for investigation.

The river water near the Rialto Bridge, a tourist attraction in Venice, appeared green as if green paint had been poured into it. Tourists passing through the canal by boat took pictures of this scene and posted them on social media (SNS), attracting global attention, according to the Associated Press.

According to local media La Nuova Venezia, the police are investigating without ruling out the possibility that the incident is related to protests by climate crisis activists. Recently, in Italy, there have been a series of "ink attacks" by the environmental group Ultima Generazione (Italian for "Last Generation"), which urges action against the climate crisis. Since last month, they have been protesting at tourist sites such as Rome's famous Trevi Fountain, demanding a halt to fossil fuel use.

This is not the first time the Grand Canal in Venice has turned green. In 1968, to mark the 34th Venice Biennale, Argentine artist Nicol?s Garc?a Uriburu performed an act of pouring green fluorescent dye into the river to raise awareness about ecology during his visit to the area.
