Hwawon Coastal Road... Haenam Palgyeong's Majestic Sunset at a Glance
The local road No. 803 connecting Mokpogu (木浦口) Lighthouse in Haenam-gun, Jeollanam-do, to Yanghwa was opened on the 25th.
According to Haenam-gun on the 29th, the newly opened section is a 2.6 km stretch that had not been constructed before, with construction having been underway since 2018 with a project budget of 22.9 billion KRW.
The road from Mokpogu Lighthouse to Yanghwa is a coastal road overlooking Siabada, the gateway to the mainland Mokpogu, offering a 180-degree panoramic view of the emerald sea and the beautiful sunset scenery along the coast, gaining fame for its stunning views.
In particular, the Mokpogu Lighthouse in Maewol-ri, Hwawon-myeon, was built in 1908 during the late Korean Empire period, standing 7.2 meters tall, and has served as a landmark for Mokpogu, the gateway to the mainland, for 95 years.
In 2003, the largest new lighthouse in Korea, standing 36.5 meters tall, was constructed, and together with the twin lighthouses, it has become a famous sunset spot where visitors can enjoy the fantastic sunset over the West Sea.
Haenam-gun is promoting infrastructure development such as establishing an Art Lighthouse Exhibition Hall to turn the Mokpogu Lighthouse area into a tourist attraction.
Along with the opening of this road, a promenade and observatory have been installed along the coastal line around the road, providing a comfortable resting place for tourists.
Furthermore, road traffic network expansion is being actively promoted in the Hwawon-myeon area of Haenam-gun, signaling a positive outlook for the activation of the Osiano Tourist Complex and the Solar City enterprise city.
Following the opening of the road between Mokpogu Lighthouse and Yanghwa, the coastal road construction between Hwawon Husan and Jangsu is underway, establishing infrastructure connecting approximately 23 km of coastal road from Mokpogu Lighthouse to Jangsu-ri and the Osiano Tourist Complex.
Additionally, the construction of the underwater tunnel connecting Hwawon and Sinan Amhae, the last connecting section of National Road No. 77, is progressing in earnest. Currently, the project is 9% complete, with earthworks underway for the excavation of the 2.73 km underwater tunnel, aiming for completion in 2027.
Once the total length of 13.49 km, including the underwater tunnel section between Haenam Hwawon and Mokpo Dallido, is connected, it is expected to boost tourism by linking with the West Coast Expressway, Muan International Airport, and high-speed rail.
In December last year, a 12.19 km, 4-lane road connecting Daejin-ri in Sanim-myeon, Haenam-gun, to Seoho Interchange (IC) in Samho-eup, Yeongam-gun, was opened, and the design for the 4-lane expansion and paving of the Masan-Sani section in Haenam is underway, significantly accelerating the expansion of the transportation network with the Solar City enterprise city.
County Governor Myeong Hyeon-gwan stated, “With the opening of the coastal road between Mokpogu Lighthouse and Yanghwa, we expect people to fully enjoy another beauty of Haenam’s coastline,” adding, “We will perfectly expand the major transportation network that will make residents’ lives more convenient and contribute to tourism activation, thereby laying the foundation for economic revitalization.”
