Supply to International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER)
"Will Expand Participation in European Nuclear Power Market"
Doosan Enerbility is supplying equipment that it directly designed and manufactured for the artificial sun project, known as the "dream energy."
Doosan Enerbility announced on the 29th that it has shipped a pressurizer to the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) international organization. Doosan Enerbility signed a contract to supply the pressurizer to the ITER international organization through an international competitive bidding process in 2020.
ITER is an international joint project to create an artificial sun on Earth, a safe and clean future energy source, by utilizing nuclear fusion, the energy production principle of the sun. To demonstrate the feasibility of large-scale nuclear fusion energy production, seven countries including Korea, the United States, Japan, and the EU are jointly developing, constructing, and operating ITER. ITER is scheduled to be completed in 2025 in the Cadarache region of France and operated until 2042.
The pressurizer supplied by Doosan Enerbility performs pressure maintenance and overpressure protection functions for the heat exchange system to be installed in ITER. It is equipment that requires the highest level of quality assurance and design verification to comply with European regulatory requirements. Immediately after the contract, Doosan Enerbility proceeded with design and material procurement, started manufacturing in March last year, completed production in April this year with domestic partners, and completed heater function tests and hydrostatic tests in the presence of the client.
Kim Jong-du, Head of Nuclear BG at Doosan Enerbility, said, “Based on the experience and technology accumulated domestically and internationally, we have met Europe’s strict standards, and we will confidently strive to expand our participation in the European nuclear power main equipment market.”
