Seocho-gu (Mayor Jeon Seong-su)’s ‘4th Construction Site Temporary Fence Imaginative Design Contest’ awarded the grand prize to Jeong Woo-yong’s work titled ‘Joyful Imagination, Seocho.’
Jeong’s work harmoniously depicted residents enjoying everyday life filled with culture and art alongside the district’s representative symbols, using the main lines and notes of a musical staff as motifs.
In particular, the piece received positive evaluations for its use of simple line drawings to effectively represent symbols such as the Seoul Arts Center, Sebitseom, and Banpo Bridge, while portraying the happy residents enjoying culture within these settings in a sophisticated image.
Earlier, the district held the contest for 12 days from the 10th to the 21st of last month under the theme ‘Pleasant Imagination, Joyful Daily Life.’ Now in its fourth year, the contest has grown in popularity, attracting 151 submissions from across the country and garnering significant attention. This month, the district selected a total of 22 works through a professional judging panel.
The Excellence Award went to two works: ‘Fun FUN Seocho’ (by Jeong Da-hye) and ‘Anything in Seocho for Every Season’ (by Heo Hye-rim). ‘Fun FUN Seocho’ was praised for cheerfully expressing the construction site scene as a ‘game’ image that anyone can enjoy.
Meanwhile, ‘Anything in Seocho for Every Season’ was highly evaluated for depicting the changing four seasons over time in various colors, expressing the happiness of residents.
Additionally, three works received the Merit Award and sixteen received the Encouragement Award. The district will award a total prize money of 17 million KRW and certificates to the final selected works as follows: ▲Grand Prize (3 million KRW) ▲Excellence Award (2 teams, 1.5 million KRW each) ▲Merit Award (3 teams, 1 million KRW each) ▲Encouragement Award (16 teams, 500,000 KRW each).
The selected works will be utilized as designs for construction site temporary fences starting in July after signing usage agreements with the winners next month.
A district official stated, “By applying stylish designs and diverse colors to the temporary fences, we expect to improve the urban landscape and breathe vitality into various parts of the community.”
The district is making various efforts to create a pleasant urban environment. Since 2017, it has applied the ‘Construction Site Temporary Fence Design Manual,’ which includes composition, materials, and installation standards, to all construction sites. Additionally, works by young artists are exhibited at village bus stops to allow anyone nearby easy access to art.
Seocho-gu Mayor Jeon Seong-su said, “I hope the urban gallery ‘Construction Site Temporary Fence,’ created from residents’ ideas, will offer rich sights and enjoyment to the community,” adding, “We will continue to build Seocho into an attractive and sophisticated cultural and artistic city where residents can enjoy art in their daily lives.”
