LG Uplus Successfully Achieves Interoperability Between Heterogeneous Outdoor Equipment with Nokia and Samji Electronics

LG Uplus announced on the 29th that it has successfully tested equipment for advancing 5G Open Radio Access Network (Open RAN) technology both outdoors and indoors in collaboration with domestic and international telecommunications equipment manufacturers Nokia and Samji Electronics.

LG Uplus Successfully Achieves Interoperability Between Heterogeneous Outdoor Equipment with Nokia and Samji Electronics LG Uplus employees are testing the interconnection of Open RAN equipment outdoors (Photo 1) and verifying the interconnection between Open RAN equipment indoors.

Open RAN is a standard technology that separates the hardware and software of wireless communication equipment such as base stations, enabling interoperability between equipment from different manufacturers. Once commercialized, Open RAN allows telecom operators to reduce costs and configure networks flexibly. From the user’s perspective, it provides access to a stable network.

LG Uplus and the two partners successfully achieved interoperability between Nokia’s Distributed Unit (O-DU) and Samji Electronics’ antenna (O-RU) equipment in an outdoor environment. Considering that previous Open RAN interoperability tests in Korea were conducted only indoors, this outdoor test confirmed LG Uplus’s potential for utilizing Open RAN technology.

Additionally, LG Uplus tested the seamless operation of Nokia’s O-DU and Samji Electronics’ O-RU equipment within an in-building environment. Through this interoperability test, the three companies also evaluated Open RAN technology performance and stability, including maximum speed by signal strength, maximum speed while moving, handover during movement, and network connection success rate.

The three companies plan to expand cooperation with domestic industry and academia to foster the domestic Open RAN ecosystem. Furthermore, LG Uplus intends to broaden collaboration with domestic SMEs by supporting Samji Electronics’ global equipment development and market entry efforts in the Open RAN sector.
