[Weather] Rain Throughout the Golden Holiday... 'Cloudy' Until the 30th

On Buddha's Birthday, rain is falling nationwide, and cloudy weather is expected to continue throughout the holiday.

According to the Korea Meteorological Administration on the 27th, as of 10 a.m. on the first day of the holiday, rain clouds associated with a northward-moving low-pressure trough are causing rain in the Seoul metropolitan area, Chungcheong, the western coast of Jeolla, and Jeju. Raindrops are also falling in the inland areas of Jeolla, northwestern inland Gyeongnam, and southwestern inland Gangwon. Light rain will continue until noon along the western coast of Jeolla.

Additionally, as rain clouds continue to move in from the West Sea, rain is expected to persist until evening in central and northern Chungbuk, and until night in the Seoul metropolitan area, Gangwon, and Chungnam. Furthermore, warm southerly winds blowing into Jeju will bring occasional rain until the afternoon.

From Sunday the 28th (tomorrow), warm and humid air flowing from the Indochina Peninsula through China into Korea will meet cold and dry air extending southward from a high-pressure system in the north, leading to the development of low pressure and rain clouds, resulting in rainfall.

The rain clouds will gradually move southward, pushed by the cold air descending from the north, shifting the rain area from central to southern regions. However, a high-pressure system remains over the southeastern part of Korea, preventing the rain clouds from quickly passing through the country.

Rainfall will begin in the early morning of the 28th in northern Gyeonggi, northern inland Gangwon, and Jeju, expanding to cover the entire central region by the morning, with rain reaching the southern regions in the afternoon.

In the central region, rain will continue until the afternoon of Monday the 29th, which is a substitute holiday; in northern Gyeongbuk, rain will persist until the evening of the same day; and in the southern regions, rain will last until the night of Tuesday the 30th. In Jeju, precipitation will continue until Wednesday the 31st.

Nationwide precipitation from the 27th to the 30th is expected to range between 30 and 80 mm. Areas such as Chungcheong, western inland Gyeongbuk, the southern east coast of Gyeongbuk, and Jeonbuk will receive over 100 mm of rain over four days, while the eastern coast of Gangwon, Ulleungdo, and Dokdo will see relatively less rainfall, between 20 and 60 mm.

Rainfall rates of around 20 mm per hour are expected at times, accompanied by thunder and lightning. The expected peak rainfall times by region are: Chungcheong from the night of the 28th to the afternoon of the 29th; Jeonbuk and Gyeongbuk from the morning to night of the 29th; Jeonnam and Gyeongnam from the night of the 29th to the early morning of the 30th; and Jeju from the morning to noon of the 30th.

The second typhoon of the year, Typhoon Miwar, currently moving west-northwest at super typhoon strength about 1,360 km northeast of Manila, Philippines, is analyzed to have no impact on this rainfall.

Miwar is expected to turn northeast after crossing the 20-degree north latitude line. Currently, the forecast favors it passing south of Okinawa, Japan, and moving out into the Pacific Ocean, but there remains a significant possibility that it could continue westward through the Bashi Channel between Taiwan and the Philippines toward China.
