“Healthy Future, Safe K-Medical Devices”… MFDS Hosts ‘Medical Device Day’

The Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS) will hold a commemorative ceremony and seminar on the 26th at The Westin Chosun Seoul under the theme "Digital Era! Healthy Future! Safe K-Medical Devices Lead" to mark the 16th Medical Device Day.


At the first part of the ceremony, the Silver Tower Industrial Medal will be awarded to Lee Jae-hwa, CEO of Daesung Marif, who has contributed to the development of the medical device industry by obtaining overseas certifications from more than 20 countries worldwide and achieving exports worth 10 million USD to 74 countries globally. A total of 11 medals and commendations, including the Industrial Medal, will be presented to Professor Song Seok-won of Gangnam Severance Hospital, Yonsei University College of Medicine, who actively contributed to the supply of rare and urgently needed medical devices for patients.


In the second part, experts will give presentations on "Medical Device Safety and Growth," offering policy suggestions for the development of the medical device industry and discussing future directions.


Additionally, an exhibition hall for designated innovative medical devices will be opened, providing an opportunity to directly experience digital therapeutics and other products developed by Korean companies.


MFDS Commissioner Oh Yu-kyung stated at the event, "Last year, the domestic medical device market size recorded approximately 11.9 trillion KRW, a 30% increase compared to the previous year," adding, "The medical device sector shows the potential as a promising future industry for Korea."


Commissioner Oh emphasized, "The MFDS will actively support by strengthening cooperation systems with overseas regulatory agencies to ensure K-medical devices can be competitive in the global market, and by enhancing organic communication and collaboration with industries so that companies can foster innovation and creativity."


This year, to celebrate the 16th Medical Device Day, the MFDS designated the period from the 18th to the 25th as "Medical Device Safety Week" and conducted various events, including a campaign to eradicate overseas direct purchases.
