Gwangyang Cultural Center Hosts Reenactment of Nimgil Procession Event

Historical Site-Based Cultural Events Created by Citizens

Gwangyang City in Jeollanam-do announced that it will hold the "2023 1st Gwangyang Cultural Won-nim-gil Procession Reenactment Event" on the 27th at 10 a.m. around Munhwawon-nim-gil (Nammun-gil, Nammun 2-gil, Nammun 3-gil) in Gwangyang-eup.

The "Gwangyang Cultural Won-nim-gil Procession Reenactment" is an event where citizens directly plan and implement the traditional procession of the local magistrate (Won-nim), which has been orally passed down among village residents, based on the historical sites of Gwangyang Eupseong Fortress from the Joseon Dynasty, incorporating various cultural ideas.

Starting with the first event in May, it is composed of a total of five sessions held on the last Saturday of each month until October (excluding August).

This session will be held under the subtitle "When the Peony Blooms" on Saturday the 27th, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., around 154 Inseo-ri, Gwangyang-eup (parking lot in front of the protected tree).

In the reenactment, two citizen honorary Won-nims (one adult Won-nim and one child Won-nim), selected through the "Find the Won-nim" contest, will parade around the Cultural Won-nim-gil area and share their experiences and stories with the citizens.

Side events include various programs such as performances of folk songs, pungmul (traditional Korean percussion music), popular songs, modern gugak (Korean traditional music), hanbok experience, folk painting photo zones, and traditional game experiences.

Park Si-hoon, director of the Gwangyang Cultural City Center, said, "This Gwangyang Cultural Won-nim-gil Procession Reenactment Event will be a cultural festival with citizens that fosters community spirit and provides a valuable opportunity to reflect on Gwangyang’s history and culture." He added, "We hope this meaningful event will enhance Gwangyang’s image as a cultural city and bring joy to its citizens."
