Additional Installation of 'Integrated Pedestrian Crossing Safety Facilities' in Songpa-gu

Songpa-gu (Mayor Seo Gang-seok) announced on the 24th that it plans to install additional ‘integrated crosswalk safety facilities’ to eradicate traffic accidents around crosswalks in child protection zones.

Songpa-gu was the first in the nation to establish a ‘real-time right-turn video alert system’ in 2020. This AI-based system encourages drivers to slow down by displaying pedestrian crossing videos and messages on LED screens in right-turn blind spots, which has been highly praised for its contribution to preventing child traffic accidents.

Since then, Songpa-gu has played a leading role in protecting child traffic safety by introducing the ‘Songpa-type Smart Traffic Safety Keeper’ in 2021 and the ‘Songpa-type Advanced Yellow Carpet’ in 2022.

Mayor Seo Gang-seok of Songpa-gu stated, “Due to the recent increase in unfortunate traffic accidents within child protection zones, we decided to install additional ‘integrated crosswalk safety facilities’ so that children can safely wait for signals.”

This year, the ‘integrated crosswalk safety facilities’ to be installed by the district consist of three types: ▲pedestrian signal voice guidance assist devices, ▲yellow footprints and yellow carpets, and ▲ground traffic lights.

The pedestrian signal voice guidance assist device is a system that issues voice warnings and guidance broadcasts when children jaywalk during red signals or wait outside the designated waiting line on the road. Currently, a total of 78 units are installed at 39 locations across 20 elementary schools, including Gadong Elementary School and Yeongpung Elementary School. This year, with a budget of approximately 380 million KRW, 36 additional units will be installed at 18 locations across 6 facilities, including Gaju Elementary School and Pungnap Daycare Center.

Yellow footprints and yellow carpets provide a safe space where children can wait before crossing the crosswalk. The yellow markings make it easy for drivers to recognize this space from a distance. This year, one yellow carpet will be installed at Ogeum Elementary School, and 47 yellow footprints will be installed at seven schools including Namcheon Elementary School.

Additionally, to protect children who cross carelessly without looking ahead due to smartphone use, ground traffic lights will be additionally installed. The installation sites include Wirye Byeol Elementary School and one other school, with a total of 20 units to be installed.

Mayor Seo Gang-seok said, “We will continue to take the lead in eliminating safety blind spots in child protection zones and ensuring traffic safety by installing facilities that apply advanced technologies.”
