Unique Exhibition Recreating Masterpieces as Spaces
Changwon Special City in Gyeongnam operates the Changdong Art Village Art Center Traveling Museum Special Exhibition <Van Gogh: The Space> in the lobby on the first floor of the City Hall main building from the 22nd to June 16th.
This exhibition was first showcased at the second-floor exhibition hall of the Changdong Art Village Art Center from March 22 to April 30, receiving great acclaim from visitors. It was praised as a unique and captivating exhibition where masterpieces were recreated in three-dimensional spaces, allowing viewers to appreciate the works within the artwork itself.
Hong Nampyo, Mayor of Changwon Special City, Gyeongnam, is listening to an art director explaining an artwork.
<Van Gogh The Space> was conducted in collaboration with the University of Barcelona in Spain and local universities, Gyeongnam National University and Changwon National University, with each university sponsoring some of the equipment used for 3D drawing.
Through joint planning with domestic and international institutions and artists, it is expected to serve as a small stepping stone for establishing Changwon, a cultural city, as a representative cultural planning platform and building external networks for Changwon Special City’s art and culture exchange.
The cultural and artistic content enhancement project of the cultural city Changwon, <Van Gogh: The Space>, was planned by the Changdong Art Village Art Center itself, organizing the exhibition space into three sections to experience Van Gogh’s works fused in 2D and 3D. The exhibition is themed around two original Van Gogh paintings: <Van Gogh’s Room in Arles> and <Caf? Terrace at Night>.
In Section 1, two digitally restored licensed 2D original Van Gogh paintings by the University of Barcelona in Spain are displayed, while Section 2 exhibits two drawings created by an AI artificial intelligence program based on Van Gogh’s originals.
Section 3 recreates a three-dimensional space based on Van Gogh’s masterpieces.
By reinterpreting the space through drawing techniques, it creates a picture-like three-dimensional space, making it an interactive exhibition where visitors can appreciate the works and enter the space within the artwork.
This special exhibition, which materializes the space within the artwork three-dimensionally in the exhibition hall by expanding the flat paintings, offers a unique experience of both 2D art and 3D three-dimensional drawing. This project provides a special opportunity to experience a fusion genre exhibition that was unfamiliar in the region.
Hong Nam-pyo, Mayor of Changwon Special City, said, “This exhibition demonstrates the differentiated planning of the cultural city Changwon, and strengthening such unique cultural content is expected to raise citizens’ interest in local culture and arts, leading to the cultural diffusion throughout Changwon Special City.”
