Damyang 5·18 Minjung Uprising 43rd Anniversary Commemoration Ceremony Held

The Damyang 5·18 People's Uprising Commemoration Committee (Representative Yoon Young-min) announced on the 22nd that it held the '43rd Anniversary Ceremony of the Damyang 5·18 People's Uprising' at Damyang-eup Central Park on the 21st.


This event was organized to honor the spirits of the democratic martyrs who sacrificed their lives to protect democracy and to inherit and develop the spirit of the May 18 Democratic Movement.

About 150 people attended the ceremony, including Lee Byung-no, Damyang County Governor, Lee Gae-ho, Member of the National Assembly, Choi Yong-man, Chairman of the County Council, Park Jong-won, Provincial Assembly Member, county council members, representatives of organizations affiliated with the event committee, and recipients of the 5·18 Democratic Movement merit awards.


The ceremony featured the awarding of the 4th annual Youth 5·18 Essay Contest, a video screening capturing the May 1980 scenes, poetry recitations and theatrical performances expressing remembrance, a rice ball sharing event, and a flash mob performance of the 'March for the Beloved' by students from the Damyang area.


In his memorial address, Governor Lee Byung-no said, “The breath of countless righteous spirits who gave their lives for democracy with one heart is still vivid under the May sky. We must strive to ensure that the noble spirit of the May martyrs is recorded as a proud history for future generations, and Damyang County will also inherit the 5·18 democratic ideals and implement empathetic administration together with the residents.”
