Environmental Improvements Including Creation of a Sports Rest Area to Revitalize the ‘Imungo Underpass Roof Yard’ Space
Installation of Various Exercise Equipment Based on Resident Preference Survey... Creating a Bright and Sophisticated Image Space
Dongdaemun-gu (Mayor Lee Pil-hyung) has created a sports rest area under the Imungo overpass to promote residents’ health and provide a place for relaxation.
The Imungo Underpass Roof Yard is a resting and community space created by utilizing the idle space beneath the bridge. Approximately 600 million KRW of city funds were invested to install benches and flower beds on the first floor and a wooden deck plaza on the second floor, but due to a lack of functional elements, resident usage rates were low.
Furthermore, at a resident communication meeting with the mayor held last March, opinions were raised requesting that the Imungo Underpass Roof Yard be improved into a highly usable space frequently visited by residents, highlighting the ongoing need for environmental improvements in the area.
Accordingly, the district installed various exercise equipment in the previously somewhat unclear-purpose space under the Imungo overpass, creating a leisure area where residents can enjoy both rest and exercise.
Prior to installation, a preference survey on exercise equipment was conducted with 3,174 residents, resulting in the installation of 10 different types of exercise equipment?including running, waist twisting, and aerial walking?on the first floor of the underpass space.
Overall environmental maintenance such as repainting and cleaning of the facilities was also carried out. Considering the space’s shaded characteristics, artificial plants were used instead of live ones to create a bright and sophisticated image.
Lee Pil-hyung, Mayor of Dongdaemun-gu, said, “The Imungo Underpass Roof Yard was created with the good intention of transforming an aging underpass space into a community area for residents, but it was regrettable that it was not activated.”
He added, “We ask for active use so that the improved sports rest area under the Imungo overpass can become a lively and bustling space filled with residents. Going forward, we will continue to create a happy Dongdaemun-gu by actively discovering spaces, improving facilities, and maintaining the environment to provide customized spaces that residents want.”
