Seoul Boramae Hospital Contract Letter Sent
First Trial Delayed Due to COVID-19
Jo Yang-rae, Honorary Chairman of Hankook & Company (formerly Hankook Technology Group), is likely to undergo a detailed psychiatric evaluation for the first time in the appellate trial regarding the commencement of limited guardianship.
The Seoul Family Court Family Division 1 (Chief Presiding Judge Jo Young-ho), which is handling the case, reportedly sent a psychiatric evaluation request letter for Chairman Jo to Seoul Boramae Hospital on the 18th.
If Boramae Hospital accepts the request, a detailed psychiatric evaluation will be conducted for the first time since 2020, when Jo’s eldest daughter, Cho Hee-kyung, director of the Hankook Tire Sharing Foundation, filed a petition for the commencement of limited guardianship.

In June 2020, Director Cho filed for adult guardianship, arguing that when Chairman Jo sold all shares of the holding company Hankook & Company to his second son, Cho Hyun-beom, then president, through a block deal, it was necessary to determine whether her father’s decision was made voluntarily and in a sound mental state.
Adult guardianship is a system that appoints a guardian to assist adults who have difficulty making decisions due to old age, disability, illness, or other reasons.
In April last year, the first trial court dismissed Director Cho’s petition, and she appealed the decision. Although the first trial court accepted Director Cho’s claim that a detailed psychiatric evaluation of Chairman Jo was necessary, the hospitals designated as the evaluation institutions responded that they could not proceed with the evaluation due to the spread of COVID-19, so the detailed psychiatric evaluation was not conducted.
Chairman Jo is reported to go to the company every day and meet with executives. He also personally attended a closed hearing during the first trial.
