Exploring New Paths for the Marine Industry ... Commemorative Event

Busan City will operate the ‘2023 Busan Marine Week’ from the 22nd to the 27th and hold various events to seek solutions for the sustainable development of the marine industry as a global marine city.

The city designated the entire month of May as the ‘2023 Busan Marine Month’ to raise public interest in the ocean and has been intensively promoting diverse events and festivals related to the marine economy, environment, and culture, which had previously been held sporadically.


The programs to be held during this Busan Marine Week, jointly hosted by Busan City and the International Newspaper to explore growth and innovation strategies for the marine industry and enhance competitiveness, are as follows.


▲ May 22: Marine Week Proclamation Ceremony & Marine Environment Conference … ‘The Sea and Human Life’


At 10 a.m. on the 22nd, the Marine Week Proclamation Ceremony will take place at the Asti Hotel Grand Ballroom, with Mayor Park Hyung-jun, Minister Cho Seung-hwan of the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, President Do Deok-hee of Korea Maritime and Ocean University, and others attending to proclaim Busan Marine Week.


Following the proclamation, a ‘Talk Concert’ will be held under the theme ‘The Sea and Human Life ? How the Sea is Connected to Our Lives,’ where representatives from marine education and research institutions and companies will share their visions for the future of the marine sector.


From 1 p.m., the ‘Marine Environment Conference’ will continue, featuring not only humanities lectures but also expert discussions on environmental conservation and industrial development strategies, including topics such as marine sand and aggregate industries and the rediscovery of glass.


▲ May 23: Marine Economy Forum … Exploring Marine Economic Issues and Crisis Response Strategies


At 10 a.m., the ‘Marine Economy Forum’ will be held at the Asti Hotel Grand Ballroom, reviewing the current status of the marine bio industry and cruise tourism industry and seeking development strategies for related industries. Experts will gather to proactively respond to rapidly changing maritime environmental regulations.


▲ May 24: Marine Industry Leaders Summit … Marine Leaders Establishing Cooperation Systems for New Industries


On the 24th, a ‘Youth Debate Competition’ where future generations discuss marine environment conservation measures will be held at 10 a.m. at the Asti Hotel, followed by the ‘Marine Industry Leaders Summit’ at 2 p.m. at the same venue, where marine industry leaders will gather to establish cooperation systems for new industries.


During the Leaders Summit, an ‘Outstanding Legislative Award’ ceremony will be held to honor lawmakers who have contributed to the development of Busan’s marine industry through active legislative activities. Five recipients will be honored: National Assembly members Kim Do-eup (Busan Buk-gu Gangseo-gu Eul), Park Jae-ho (Busan Nam-gu Eul), and Busan City Council members Seo Guk-bo (Dongnae-gu 3), Lee Jong-jin (Buk-gu 3), and Sung Hyun-dal (Nam-gu 3).


Subsequent lectures will share knowledge on marine new industries, including ▲ Satellite Data-Based Digital Transformation Strategies for the Marine Industry ▲ Responding to the Shipping Market in the New Normal Era ▲ Application and Future of Arctic Sea Route Navigation Ship Technology, and discuss opinions on establishing cooperation systems among government, industry, academia, and research.


▲ May 25: Busan Marine Conference … Reviewing Current Issues and Discussing Development Strategies for the Marine Industry


At 10 a.m. on the 25th, the ‘Busan Marine Conference,’ which has become a non-face-to-face discussion event through an online platform, will be held.


The conference will carefully diagnose current issues in the regional marine industry, such as globalization strategies for fisheries, Busan’s prospects as a gateway city to the polar regions, and decarbonization and digital transformation technologies, and continue with policy proposals.


In particular, the conference will be conducted in an interactive communication format via a web platform, allowing any citizen to easily participate.


▲ May 27: Citizens’ Movement Headquarters Launch Ceremony … Reducing Marine Waste for Future Generations, Starting with Me!


At 10 a.m. on the 27th, the ‘Citizens’ Movement Headquarters Launch Ceremony’ for marine environment conservation will be held at Gwangalli Beach. The newly launched Citizens’ Movement Headquarters will walk along Gwangalli after the event, engaging in plogging (picking up trash while jogging) to raise public awareness about reducing marine waste and initiate actions for a healthy sea.


Kim Byung-gi, Director of the Marine and Fisheries Bureau of Busan City, stated, “To overcome the crises and challenges facing the marine and fisheries sectors, we will actively reflect the insights presented during the 2023 Busan Marine Week in policies to help Busan leap forward as a truly global marine city.” He added, “We ask for the active interest of citizens in the diverse events held throughout the 2023 Busan Marine Week.”
