Eunpyeong-gu 2023 Comprehensive Heatwave Countermeasure Implementation
Heatwave Countermeasure Period from the 20th to September 30th
Protection of Vulnerable Groups Including the Elderly through Disaster Helpers Operation
Operation of 188 Cooling Centers and 84 Shade Tents, Prevention of Heatwave Damage through Road Watering
Eunpyeong-gu (Mayor Kim Mi-kyung) announced that it will actively implement the '2023 Comprehensive Heatwave Countermeasure' to prevent casualties and facility accidents caused by this summer's heatwave.
The heatwave countermeasure period will last about four months, from the 20th of this month to September 30th. According to the Korea Meteorological Administration, this summer's temperatures are expected to be similar to or higher than the average year.
First, the district will operate a dedicated situation management task force (TF) composed of practical departments during the heatwave countermeasure period to carry out heatwave damage prevention activities such as situation management and heat-related illness monitoring.
During heatwave warnings, 188 locations including welfare centers, senior citizen centers, and community service centers will be designated and opened as cooling centers accessible to all local residents. Additionally, 84 shade tents will be operated at crosswalks, traffic islands, and other locations.
During the daytime peak temperature hours, to prevent urban heat island effects, water sprinkling trucks will be deployed along six major arterial roads including Eunpyeong-ro, covering a total distance of 27.8 km. At nine bus stops, smart shelters equipped with cooling facilities and other conveniences will be operated to provide resting places for citizens waiting for buses in the heat.
To ensure the safety of vulnerable groups during the heatwave, disaster helpers, our neighborhood care teams, and visiting nurses will conduct welfare calls and health management for elderly living alone, disabled persons, and those with mobility difficulties.
At construction sites, the operation of heatwave rest time systems will be recommended to prevent casualties.
Kim Mi-kyung, Mayor of Eunpyeong-gu, stated, "As heatwaves become more frequent due to abnormal climate conditions, we will do our best to prevent casualties and facility accidents through thorough prior preparation."
