The Quad summit, a consultative body consisting of the United States, Japan, Australia, and India, was held on the night of the 20th in Hiroshima, Japan.
The Quad summit was originally scheduled to be held in Australia on the 24th, but U.S. President Joe Biden canceled his visit to Australia due to domestic issues, so it was held in Hiroshima, where the Group of Seven (G7) summit was taking place.
The United States and Japan are G7 member countries. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese also attended the G7 summit at the invitation of Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, who is the chair of the G7 this year, so all are gathered in Hiroshima.
Prime Minister Kishida emphasized the importance of a "free and open Indo-Pacific" again in his opening remarks at the Quad summit.
The free and open Indo-Pacific is a vision shared by the Quad participating countries and strongly aims to check China, which is strengthening its presence in the Indo-Pacific.
At this Quad summit, the participating leaders were expected to confirm cooperation policies to maintain a maritime order based on the rule of law, keeping in mind China, which is expanding its influence in the Indo-Pacific region.
