First among Seoul's Autonomous Districts, ‘Kookmin University Industry-Academic Cooperation Foundation’ Designated as Dongdaemun-gu Carbon Neutral Support Center
Establishment of ‘2050 Dongdaemun-gu Comprehensive Greenhouse Gas Reduction Plan’... Specific Reduction Measures by Sector
Dongdaemun-gu (Mayor Lee Pil-hyung) has established the ‘2050 Dongdaemun-gu Comprehensive Greenhouse Gas Reduction Plan’ to actively respond to the climate crisis and become a future city leading global standards. On the 19th, it designated the ‘Kookmin University Industry-Academic Cooperation Foundation’ as the Dongdaemun-gu Carbon Neutral Support Center, the first such designation among Seoul’s autonomous districts.
Earlier, on February 9th, the district expressed a strong commitment to reduce greenhouse gases by 40% by 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, aiming to grow into a world-class city in line with global standards through the ‘2050 Carbon Neutral City Declaration Ceremony.’
To realize this, under the slogan ‘Carbon Neutral City Dongdaemun-gu Changing My Life,’ the district established the ‘2050 Dongdaemun-gu Comprehensive Greenhouse Gas Reduction Plan,’ specifying greenhouse gas reduction measures by sector including ▲Building a Carbon Neutral Response Foundation ▲Green Building ▲Green Mobility ▲Green Cycle ▲Green Forest.
In particular, recognizing the need for a professional and independent institution to support the transition to a carbon-neutral society and promote green growth, the district secured funding through a Ministry of Environment national subsidy application. After a public recruitment from April 20 to May 10 and subsequent document and on-site evaluations, the Kookmin University Industry-Academic Cooperation Foundation was finally designated as the Dongdaemun-gu Carbon Neutral Support Center.
The Dongdaemun-gu Carbon Neutral Support Center is scheduled to open in July after a preparation period including the allocation of dedicated personnel. It plans to support tasks such as ▲Implementation evaluation according to the basic plan for carbon neutrality and green growth ▲Establishment of Dongdaemun-gu greenhouse gas inventory ▲Development of citizen participation programs for carbon neutrality practice to build a carbon neutral response foundation.
The district will not only designate and operate the Dongdaemun-gu Carbon Neutral Support Center but also actively promote projects in ‘Green Building,’ ‘Green Mobility,’ ‘Green Cycle,’ and ‘Green Forest.’
Lee Pil-hyung, Mayor of Dongdaemun-gu, stated, “By designating the ‘Dongdaemun-gu Carbon Neutral Support Center’ as the first among Seoul’s autonomous districts, we expect to lay the foundation for a ‘bottom-up carbon neutral society’ led by the local community. Moving forward, our district plans to implement specialized carbon neutral policies unique to Dongdaemun-gu, including designation as a Net-Zero City, sister city partnerships with leading overseas cities, and the creation of carbon neutral themed streets, all under the goal of realizing an eco-friendly green city leading carbon neutrality.”
