At the entrance ceremony, Governor Park Woo-ryang said, “The 1004 oysters raised through natural exposure aquaculture are well adapted to harsh external environments, have a long shelf life, and are highly competitive in price due to their excellent taste and flavor.” He added, “Compared to other aquaculture species, the labor intensity is lower, and operating costs such as feed and labor expenses are reduced, resulting in a higher net income rate.”
He especially noted, “It is a stable aquaculture industry that anyone, regardless of age or gender, can participate in. Women, multicultural families, full-time farmers and fishermen, and returnees to fishing are all showing interest and applying to the 1004 Oyster Aquaculture School.”
Shinan-gun plans to operate the school from May to December for 24 enrolled students, providing learner-centered practical field training covering all processes related to the production, distribution, sales, and tourism of 1004 oysters, along with expert knowledge through invited lecturers from specialized institutions.
After completion, the county will generously support rental and subsidy projects for aquaculture facilities, securing licenses for aquaculture farms, and providing aquaculture equipment support. The Shinan Fisheries Research Institute will be open at all times to offer opportunities for field experience not only to graduates but also to enrolled students and the general public, helping them accumulate diverse knowledge and information about 1004 oyster aquaculture technology.
To ensure the stable establishment of 1004 oyster aquaculture, the county completed public-led pilot aquaculture of 1004 oysters from 2019 to 2021 during the introduction phase. From 2022 to 2027, it secured 7 billion KRW in national funds over three years to promote a joint management project led by both public and private sectors, simultaneously advancing the scaling of aquaculture facilities and rental projects for graduates. The ultimate goal is to industrialize 1004 oyster aquaculture led by the private sector starting in 2028.
Governor Park Woo-ryang stated, “We plan to introduce the 1004 oysters produced in the Shinan clean tidal flats, registered as a World Natural Heritage site, for the first time at the ‘Hong Kong FOOD EXPO,’ Asia’s largest well-known expo, to present the unique charm of Shinan 1004 oysters to the world. We will secure specialized export buyers and showcase them globally through exports to Asia.”
