Do You Know Gyeongsan's 'Byeoljjiyajang' Night Market Full of Food and Attractions? ... Operated 40 Times Every Weekend The scene when Byeoljji Market, set up in the central plaza of Gyeongsan Public Market, opened last year.

The Byeoljji Night Market will operate a total of 40 times from its opening on the 19th until the end of October, every Friday and Saturday from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. This year, the night market is divided into a Friday night market featuring special performances and busking shows, and a Saturday experiential night market with children’s programs and customer participation events, presenting a distinctive night market experience.

First launched in 2022 as part of a cultural tourism development project, the Byeoljji Night Market operated 28 times, attracting 20,000 visitors and achieving sales of 300 million KRW. The overall market saw a more than 20% increase in customer inflow and a 10% rise in sales compared to the previous year, demonstrating tangible results in revitalizing the market economy.

A Gyeongsan City official stated, “At the Byeoljji Night Market, about 200 stores and 20 street vendors sell around 40 types of products including food and accessories. ‘Byeoljji’ is a word from North Korean dialect meaning a meteor or shooting star, and the name Byeoljji Night Market was chosen through a public contest.”

Mayor Cho Hyun-il said, “We will continue to operate this Byeoljji Night Market, prepared together with local merchants, university professors, experts, and civic groups, aiming to enhance the brand and competitiveness of Gyeongsan Public Market for a better future of Gyeongsan City. We will strive to establish it as Gyeongsan’s representative place for food, sights, and entertainment where local merchants and citizens come together, creating the nation’s top Byeoljji Night Market.”

Tae Won-chan, director of the Gyeongsan Public Market Merchants Association, said, “Through the successful operation of this Byeoljji Night Market, we will do our best to revitalize not only Gyeongsan Public Market but also the surrounding commercial areas, serving as an opportunity to boost the local economy.”
