"Data Center Game Changer"..Samsung Electronics Mass Produces World's First 12nm-Class DDR5 DRAM

20% Productivity Improvement and 23% Power Consumption Reduction Compared to Previous Generation

Samsung Electronics is showcasing its microfabrication technology competitiveness by mass-producing industry-leading 12-nanometer-class DRAM that enhances performance and power efficiency. The company aims to strengthen its dominance in the DRAM market by introducing a diverse range of related products to the market.

On the 18th, Samsung Electronics announced that it has started mass production of 16-gigabit (Gb) Double Data Rate 5 (DDR5) DRAM using the industry-leading 12-nanometer-class (5th generation 10-nanometer-class) process. Following the completion of compatibility verification based on the AMD platform last December, the company officially announced the market launch.

The products mass-produced by Samsung Electronics apply leading-edge technology to improve productivity by about 20% compared to the previous generation products. Power consumption has improved by approximately 23%. These products help increase efficiency in power operation in data centers and other environments. The maximum operating speed supports 7.2 gigabits per second (Gbps, data transferred in Gb units per second). This speed can process two UHD movies with a capacity of 30 gigabytes (GB) each per second.

To launch this product, Samsung Electronics applied a new material with a high dielectric constant (K) to increase the capacitor capacity that stores charge. When the capacitor capacity of DRAM increases, the data signal voltage difference becomes larger, making it easier to distinguish. This means errors do not occur. Additionally, technologies such as operating current reduction and noise reduction that can more reliably distinguish data were applied, completing the industry-leading process.

Samsung Electronics plans to continuously expand its 12-nanometer-class DRAM lineup according to customer demand and supply it to various applications such as data centers, artificial intelligence (AI), and next-generation computing. As demand for the latest DRAM standard DDR5 is expected to accelerate next year, the company plans to respond accordingly and increase its revenue sources. According to market research firm Omdia, DDR5 DRAM is expected to account for 27% of total DRAM next year, surpassing DDR4 DRAM (23%) for the first time.

Lee Ju-young, Vice President and Head of DRAM Development at Samsung Electronics Memory Business Division, said, "We will secure high-performance, high-capacity products to meet the computing market demand that requires large-capacity processing," adding, "We will continue to lead the DRAM market by commercializing products with high productivity in a timely manner." Samsung Electronics ranked first in DRAM market sales in the fourth quarter of last year, with a market share of 42.7%. Following behind were SK Hynix (27.0%) and US-based Micron (25.9%).
