Busan City Holds Welcome Event for High-Level Officials Attending the 'Korea-Latin America Future Cooperation Forum' Busan City Hall.

The ‘2023 Korea-Latin America Future Cooperation Forum’ is an event hosted annually by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, inviting high-ranking officials from Latin American countries to build future cooperation between Korea and Latin America. This year’s event was held on the morning of the 16th in Seoul.

The forum was held under the theme of ‘Changing World Order and Korea-Latin America Mutual Cooperation’ and covered three areas: ▲ cooperation in implementing the Indo-Pacific strategy ▲ economic security (minerals, energy, trade and investment) cooperation ▲ deepening practical cooperation tailored to infrastructure, agricultural innovation, and climate change.

Taking this opportunity, the city invited the visiting high-ranking Latin American officials to Busan and arranged a welcoming event including a meeting with Mayor Park Hyung-jun and a tour of the Bukhang area, the candidate site for the ‘2030 Busan World Expo’.

The meeting with Mayor Park will take place at noon on the 18th at the Westin Chosun Hotel, attended by ministers and vice ministers from nine Latin American countries, governors, senators, heads of diplomatic missions in Korea, and UN directors among other senior officials.

Mayor Park plans to discuss with the visiting Latin American ministers and vice ministers ways to activate city diplomacy between Busan and Latin American cities, as well as cooperation in various fields including economy, maritime affairs, culture, environment, and space industry.

Following the meeting, the high-ranking Latin American officials will tour the Haeundae area to experience the charm of the beautiful city of Busan firsthand, then inspect the Bukhang area, the venue for the ‘2030 Busan World Expo’ and the site of redevelopment projects leading Busan’s centennial future.

Mayor Park Hyung-jun said, “We welcome the high-ranking officials from nine Latin American countries visiting Busan. As Busan and Latin America are key partners opening the future together, we will actively promote the strengths of Busan as a global city through this event and build closer cooperative relationships with Latin American countries.”

Busan has maintained continuous exchanges with Latin American countries since establishing sister and friendship city agreements with four cities: Rio de Janeiro in Brazil, Valpara?so in Chile, Panama City in Panama, and Tijuana in Mexico.

In July last year, Busan co-hosted the ‘2022 Korea-Latin America Future Cooperation Forum’ with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Busan. The city has also actively collaborated with the Ministry by inviting the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Central America to Busan in November last year for the ‘Korea-Central America Special Roundtable’ and inviting high-ranking officials to Busan in December for the ‘Korea-Caribbean High-Level Forum,’ continuing efforts to promote mutual cooperation with Latin American countries.
