Goheung-gun Takes Emergency Pesticide Support for 'Tropical Gypsy Moth Outbreak'

Request to Minimize Damage by Applying Control Agents Timely in Pest Management

Goheung-gun, Jeollanam-do announced that the tropical fall armyworm, which damages young corn leaves and stems, was discovered on May 15.

This year, the tropical fall armyworm, which feeds on crops such as sorghum, was first reported in Jeju on April 18. It is characterized by causing damage to the leaves and stems of crops during its early larval stage and having a rapid reproduction rate.

In particular, the tropical fall armyworm, known to damage over 80 crops including corn, sorghum, and rice, has a development period of 44 days from egg to adult and lays 200 to 300 eggs.

Accordingly, Goheung-gun has installed 21 sex pheromone traps over 71 hectares of corn fields since April 24 to continuously conduct detailed field monitoring. They are preparing emergency pesticide support to control the larvae during the 2nd to 3rd instar stages according to the tropical fall armyworm monitoring and control manual from the Rural Development Administration.

An official from the Goheung Agricultural Technology Center stated, “The optimal time to control the tropical fall armyworm is when the larvae are in the 2nd to 3rd instar stages. Missing this period can cause significant damage, so corn farmers are urged to frequently inspect their fields and apply appropriate pesticides immediately upon discovering damaged leaves or young larvae to minimize damage.”
