Technology Capable of Removing Over 95% of Microplastics
Sun-dried salt that can be consumed safely without concerns about radioactivity is being developed. As the Japanese government plans to discharge contaminated water from the Fukushima nuclear power plant into the ocean, concerns about radioactive exposure to sun-dried salt and fish have arisen. In response, a domestic small and medium-sized enterprise has embarked on developing technology to alleviate public anxiety.
On the 16th, EcoSalt announced that it will officially develop technology this year to detect and remove radioactivity from sun-dried salt. EcoSalt is an eco-friendly salt production company established in 2021. Through industry-academic cooperation, EcoSalt explained that it plans to complete the development of technology within the next year that can detect radioactivity in seawater and sun-dried salt and remove radioactive substances such as cesium, plutonium, strontium, and iodine through a chemical treatment process.
EcoSalt’s radioactivity-safe "Safe Salt" is being developed based on existing patented technology. EcoSalt holds a patent for technology that removes microplastics from sun-dried salt. Using this patented method, the company has produced salt that removes microplastics, salt with reduced bitterness by removing bittern, and salt that retains natural minerals such as magnesium. EcoSalt’s technology removes over 95% of microplastics from sun-dried salt and lowers the bittern content. This patented method won the Grand Prize in the Lifestyle and Food category at the 15th Korea Excellent Patent Awards hosted by the Korea Intellectual Property Office in 2021. It also received the Best Food Industry Award at the 2022 International Food Industry Exhibition last year.
Yeom Eun-seon, CEO of EcoSalt, expressed concern that microplastics and radioactivity will continue to broadly threaten our health and dining tables, and stated that she aims to perfect the sun-dried salt made by the natural environment of the West Sea through "science." CEO Yeom said, "In the future, we will supply healthy and safe salt not only to households and restaurants but also to food-related industries such as kimchi and salted seafood, contributing to the advancement of the food industry. We will also take the lead in enhancing the competitiveness of K-Food by supplying premium, highest-quality salt."
