On the 16th, Buk-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City announced that it has secured a project fund of 370 million KRW after being selected for the 'Youth Autonomous Space Expansion Contest Project' hosted by Gwangju City.
This contest project was conducted to support the creation of dedicated spaces where youth can enjoy rest and wholesome leisure activities through remodeling of idle spaces in public institutions and private facilities.
Accordingly, Buk-gu plans to transform the social enterprise space on the first floor of the currently vacant Imdong Seorim Village Happy Housing, with a total floor area of 135㎡, into a youth-exclusive space equipped with a book cafe, dance room, PC zone, karaoke room, and resting area.
The project site is located near educational facilities such as Seorim Elementary School and Bukseong Middle School, as well as four large apartment complexes, providing excellent accessibility for youth. Additionally, there are no youth-harmful facilities within a 200m radius, making it an ideal location for establishing a dedicated space.
Buk-gu plans to sign a free space lease agreement with Gwangju City and Gwangju Urban Corporation within this month and proceed with remodeling detailed design and construction aiming for an opening in February next year.
Furthermore, from space design to operation, the opinions of youth will be actively reflected, and various programs such as rest, entertainment, and cultural experiences will be developed to support the healthy growth of youth.
A Buk-gu official stated, “We will focus on the substance of the project so that it can become a hub space for local youth activities and communication,” and added, “We will continue to discover and promote various policies to help youth grow up properly and healthily.”
