Gwangyang City, Runner-up in the Jeollanam-do Sports Festival Overall Competition

Achieving Balanced Results Across 24 Events Including Table Tennis and Jokgu Championships

Gwangyang City in Jeollanam-do announced on the 12th that it achieved the remarkable feat of finishing as the overall runner-up at the '62nd Jeollanam-do Sports Festival' held in Wando County.


The 62nd Jeollanam-do Sports Festival took place over four days from the 12th to the 15th, with athletes from 22 cities and counties competing fiercely in 24 events.

Gwangyang City sent a delegation of 224 athletes and 189 officials to participate in all 24 events, proudly showcasing their honed skills and earning a total score of 36,275 points, demonstrating the strength of their valuable overall runner-up position, nearly as prestigious as winning first place.


The city secured first place in table tennis and jokgu, and achieved second place in golf, bowling, soft tennis, judo, and athletics, showing excellent results across all competitions.


Among the athletics events, where the city's professional team athletes participated, Gwangyang won 3 gold medals, 2 silver medals, and 7 bronze medals in track and field, and also placed third in the marathon, contributing to their overall second-place finish.


The Gwangyang City delegation demonstrated fair play throughout all events, and the Gwangyang City Sports Council executives and athletes united in enthusiastic group cheering, widely promoting the city's spirit of unity.


Kim Yong-seo, Chairman of the Gwangyang City Sports Council, stated, “As the athletes and officials are working together and doing their best for the development of the Sports Council, we will repay with even better results at next year’s competition.”


Jung In-hwa, Mayor of Gwangyang City, said, “Following last year’s 4th place, this year’s valuable achievement of 2nd place is the result of the athletes’ sweat and effort, and thanks to the support and encouragement of the citizens of Gwangyang.”


He added, “I am grateful to the Gwangyang City Sports Council for their wholehearted support, both materially and spiritually, allowing the athletes and delegation to focus on training as they prepared tirelessly day and night for the provincial sports festival.”


The results of the 62nd Jeollanam-do Sports Festival were as follows: 1st place Yeosu City (40,725 points), 2nd place Gwangyang City (36,275 points), 3rd place Suncheon City (33,375 points), 4th place Mokpo City (32,375 points), and 5th place Wando County (30,680 points).


Meanwhile, the 63rd Jeollanam-do Sports Festival in 2024 is scheduled to be held in Yeonggwang County.
