Government Begins Research on Hydrogen Blending in City Gas Pipelines

The government will invest 28 billion won in developing technology to supply hydrogen to homes using the city gas pipeline network.

On the 16th, the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy held a meeting on hydrogen blending in city gas pipelines at the Korea Gas Safety Corporation's main conference room, and conducted a kickoff meeting for hydrogen blending projects with industry, academia, research institutes, and specialized organizations.

Participants discussed safety verification measures aiming to blend up to 20% hydrogen into the currently used city gas pipelines and pledged mutual cooperation.

By supplying hydrogen to each household through the city gas pipeline network connected nationwide, it is expected to reduce carbon emissions and secure the economic benefits of large-scale hydrogen distribution.

To ensure safety when blending hydrogen into existing city gas supplies, safety standards will be established by 2026 to verify the safety of the entire hydrogen blending cycle, including gas facilities used at home such as boilers and gas ranges.

Lee Ok-heon, Director of Hydrogen Economy Policy at the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, said, "Through the 'Hydrogen Safety Management Roadmap 2.0,' we will proactively establish safety standards necessary for hydrogen co-firing power generation and city gas hydrogen blending to safely produce and utilize clean hydrogen, accelerating greenhouse gas reduction and the hydrogen economy."
