Yeongdeok-gun Public Health Center in Gyeongbuk is operating the "Strong Joints, Healthy Body" aquatic exercise class program to prevent chronic degenerative diseases such as obesity and arthritis and to alleviate daily pain for the elderly in the area.
The aquatic exercise class takes place in water, which reduces joint pressure due to buoyancy, thereby decreasing pain and allowing free movement of the joints. Additionally, the water resistance helps develop muscles and tissues evenly, making it effective for obesity management.
The public health center started the aquatic exercise class on the 11th of last month, and due to high positive responses from the elderly and many requests for additional sessions, they decided to expand the program for a second term.
Accordingly, the aquatic exercise classes for both the first and second terms will be held five times a week at the National Sports Center swimming pool until July. The program targets individuals with obesity or suspected arthritis, providing preliminary basic examinations and swimming pool usage education beforehand, followed by instruction from professional trainers using aqua health gymnastics methods.
Kim Jae-hee, director of Yeongdeok-gun Public Health Center, stated, “This aquatic exercise is suitable for the elderly whose physical activity decreases and is less burdensome on the body. We hope it helps the elderly develop regular exercise habits and manage obesity and arthritis on their own.”
